Harmful messages about what it means to “be a man”–also called toxic masculinity–are ingrained in the minds of males from the minute they are born.

From the first time a little boy scrapes his knee, to the time he grows up and starts his own family, he is taught by family, friends, and the media that as a male he must embody certain “rules” to be accepted as a man.

Rules like:

  • Men don’t cry
  • Men don’t show weakness
  • Men don’t seek help

The damaging effects are obvious.

Men are more at risk for substance abuse than women. They downplay symptoms of mental illness and are less likely to seek help in crisis situations.

These problems have only worsened since the year 2000, with men being 3 times more likely than women to die by suicide.

It’s time to make a change.

Read these books to learn how you can embody a healthy masculine identity. Find tools to live a more successful, purposeful, and emotionally fulfilling life–all while letting go of toxic masculine narratives and redefining what it means to “be a man.”
